One experienced trial lawyer for cases in Durango, Silverton and Telluride.
A criminal charge in a small mountain community can feel isolating. The prosecutor, the deputies, and the judge often know each other, and you may feel like the only outsider in the room. You need an advocate who knows how Western Colorado courts work.
Daniel Shaffer has spent his career in these courtrooms. He has tried nearly 100 jury cases and represented thousands of clients in state and federal court across the region. Daniel Shaffer Law represents clients charged in La Plata, San Juan, and San Miguel counties, and Dan travels to each courthouse from our Grand Junction office.
La Plata County: Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio, Hesperus and surrounding communities. State and federal cases are heard at the La Plata County Courthouse in Durango.
San Juan County: Silverton and the surrounding high country. Cases are heard at the historic San Juan County Courthouse in Silverton.
San Miguel County: Telluride, Mountain Village, Norwood, Placerville and communities across the county. Cases are heard at the San Miguel County Courthouse in Telluride.
Southwest Colorado spans two state judicial districts. La Plata and San Juan counties are in the 6th Judicial District. San Miguel County is in the 7th, alongside Montrose, Delta, Ouray and Gunnison counties.
Federal cases follow a different map. Cases from La Plata and San Juan counties are generally heard by the U.S. District Court in Durango, while cases from San Miguel County go to Grand Junction. Dan works in both systems and often represents clients whose cases cross jurisdictions, including federal drug cases built on wiretaps, informants and controlled buys.
Dan was extremely helpful throughout my case and I would recommend him to anyone seeking legal advice with their case he is extremely professional made things quick, easy, and painless .
